Boundary Conditions

Suncor measures progress by monitoring selected performance indicators. These indicators provide insight on the environmental, economic and social impacts and benefits of Suncor's business and are used to continuously improve performance.

Consolidated Suncor-wide performance indicators are provided in this section as well as indicators for each operating business — Oil Sands (including our Firebag in situ operations), Natural Gas and In Situ Resources, Refining and Marketing Canada (including our St. Clair Ethanol Plant beginning in 2007), Refining and Marketing U.S.A., and Major Projects. In 2007 the Renewable Energy and Business Development Group moved from the Natural Gas and In Situ Resources Business Unit to the Refining and Marketing Canada Business Unit. Also in 2008 the In Situ Drilling group moved from the Oil Sands Business Unit to the Natural Gas and In Situ Resources Business Unit. Both of these changes were not felt to be material to the overall performance indicators, and as a result data in previous years was not restated.

Suncor is also part of several joint ventures, including the Sun-Canadian Pipeline Company Limited, UPI Energy LP, Pioneer Petroleum, and Sun Petrochemicals. As Suncor has control and significant impact over the Sun-Canadian Pipeline Company Limited, all performance indicators for this entity are included under R&M Canada. Suncor does not have control over the other joint ventures, however can be considered to have significant influence due to board voting rights. However, these joint ventures are not deemed to pose significant risk to Suncor's sustainability performance, and thus are not included in the performance indicators.
