Suncor is working to maintain and improve air quality near our operations, even as our energy production increases. We are taking action on air quality by improving our energy efficiency and investing in new technologies. We have introduced a number of initiatives aimed at monitoring and reducing sulphur dioxide (SO₂), nitrogen oxides (NOx), volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other emissions from our operations.
- Upgrades to our Commerce City refinery in Colorado cut SO2 emissions in half between 2004 and 2006.
- Injecting gases underground near our South Rosevear gas plant in Alberta eliminates carbon dioxide (C02) and SO2 emissions from the facility.
- New equipment and processes are mitigating operational odours at our oil sands base plant and in situ site.
- An $800 million sulphur removal plant will be a key part of our new upgrader.
- Suncor participates in the Wood Buffalo Environmental Association, a multi-stakeholder group that monitors air quality around the clock in the Wood Buffalo region and reports it publicly.
